Description

A traditional North American Smudging vessel.

Used to keep ashes and cinders and unburned plants and resins contained.

Smudging with an abalone shell invites in the element of water as they are a gift from the sea. Earth is represented by the unlit plant matter, the lit product represents fire and the smoke represents air. In this way, the act of smudging invites all the elements of Mother Earth (Gaia) into the center of the ceremony to hold space for and support the intended transformation(s).

The shells of abalones have a low, open spiral structure, and are characterized by several open respiratory pores in a row near the shell's outer edge. The thick inner layer of the shell is composed of nacre (mother-of-pearl), which in many species is highly iridescant, giving rise to a range of strong, changeable colors, which make the shells attractive to humans as decorative objects, jewelry, and as a source of colorful mother of pearl.
